The Quiet Harm of Labels in the Computer Science Classroom

Some labels sound harmless.

“Low ability.”
“Gifted.”
“Lazy.”
“Disruptive.”
“Quiet one.”
“Slow worker.”

They slip out in staffrooms. They sit in seating plans. They hide in our heads.

And students hear them — even when we think they don’t.


Labels don’t describe students.

They shape them.

A student who hears “you’re not very logical” stops trying logical problems.

A student called “bright” becomes scared to get things wrong.

A student known as “the naughty one” starts living up to the reputation.

Not because they want to.

Because humans tend to become what the environment expects of them.

Especially children.


Computer Science is where this happens most

This subject is dangerous for labels.

Why?

Because it’s seen as:

  • logical
  • precise
  • black and white
  • right or wrong

So we accidentally create categories:

“They’re just not a CS person.”

But here’s the truth:

Most students who “struggle” with CS are not struggling with thinking.

They’re struggling with confidence, terminology, or fear of being wrong in front of a screen.

That’s very different.


The joke that isn’t funny

We’ve all said it.

“Oh, he’s the one who never understands loops.”

Said lightly. Said jokingly.

But the student hears:

“Loops are not for me.”

And from that day on, they stop trying with loops.

Not because they can’t.

Because they’ve been given a role.


The long-term damage

Labels don’t stay in the lesson.

They follow students into:

  • option choices
  • exam confidence
  • career beliefs
  • how they see their own intelligence

A Year 8 comment becomes a GCSE mindset.

A GCSE mindset becomes an A-Level decision.

And sometimes, a life decision.

All from a throwaway label that felt harmless at the time.


What to say instead (small shifts, big difference)

Instead of:

❌ “You’re not good at this”
Try:
✅ “You haven’t understood this yet

❌ “You’re slow today”
Try:
✅ “Take your time — this one needs thinking”

❌ “They’re my top set”
Try:
✅ “They’re at a different stage”

❌ “You always rush”
Try:
✅ “Let’s slow this one down”

You’re not changing the student.

You’re changing the story they tell themselves.


The quiet power teachers forget they have

Students build their identity from tiny repeated messages.

Not big speeches.

Not assemblies.

Just the small, daily language they hear in lessons.

And Computer Science, more than most subjects, can either build thinkers…

Or quietly convince students they are “not that type of person.”


A little humour, but a serious truth

Every class has:

  • the one who finishes first
  • the one who asks 12 questions
  • the one staring at the screen like it personally offended them

But none of those are identities.

They are moments.

And moments pass.

Unless we freeze them into labels.


What students actually need to hear

They need to hear:

“This is hard because it’s new, not because you can’t do it.”

“You’re learning to think in a new way.”

“Struggling is part of learning to code.”

Because that is the truth.

And it keeps doors open instead of quietly closing them.


Before you end your next lesson

Listen to how you describe students.

Not out loud.

In your own mind.

That’s where labels start.

And that’s where they can be stopped.

Final thought

Students rarely remember the exact content of a lesson.

But they always remember how a subject made them feel about themselves.

Make sure Computer Science is the place they discover they can think — not where they decide they can’t.
